The British Masters was long a blockbuster tournament on the European Tour schedule from its inception in 1946 up until 2008. Throughout the 1980s, the world’s very best golfers would travel far and wide to battle it out. Foreign favourites such as Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, and Bernhard Langer succeeded on some of Britain’s finest courses. Local heroes also ran riot with the likes of Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam lifting the trophy in the past. After the huge success of the 2017 event, The Betfred British Masters will return to Close House, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 2020. Former World Number One, Lee Westwood is also coming back as host following in the footsteps of Ian Poulter (2015), Luke Donald (2016), Justin Rose (2018) and Tommy Fleetwood (2019). With record attendance at Close House in 2017 and an impressive field at both Walton Heath and Hillside in 2018 and 2019, this year’s British Masters is geared up to be the best yet.
